The Future of New York in The Midst Of Rising Sea Levels Resulting From High Global Warming Temperatures
As it has always been said, choices have consequences. Following the recurrent human activities involving burning of oil, coal, and deforestation, the level of Carbon IV Oxide has increased. These gases have continued to trap heat that bounces back after hitting the earth surface, which has led to increased temperatures. These changes in climatic conditions confirms a geologic era where human activities are key in shaping the climatic conditions. Resultantly, these temperatures have heated the ocean and sea waters causing them to expand, thus experiencing rising ocean levels. In another way, these hot temperatures have made the glaciers to meltdown, and end in the seas causing the sea levels to rise. This has been a global challenge as the rising sea levels have caused irreparable losses that manifest in form of disasters. New York City, in particular, has been on the receiving end. Rationale and Justification of This Research
New York City, largely considered as the largest city in the US, is suffering from the rise in sea levels. Extreme levels have led to recurrent storms that have caused erosions, damage of properties, and in some instances losing the needed wetlands. The research will paint a true picture of what the future holds in terms of New York’s sea level, and what it means to the gross domestic product, and ecosystem of New York City. With this information, it would prove possible to assess the effects of rising sea levels in New York City.
Analysis of New York City and the Rising Sea Levels
New York City is considered one of the greatest economic zones in the United States of America as it is home to over 8.4 million people (Current and Projected Populations, 2018). The city is an appealing hub for education, business activities, artistic and cultural work, and transportation. It is unfortunate that the rise in sea levels in this area has brought adverse effects. Categorically, New York City will stand the chance to lose $ 2.3 trillion properties from flooding resulting from the increasing sea levels (New York City, NY, USA , 2010). If the current temperatures persist, it is anticipated that New York City would only stand to face at least one adverse flooding storm in a century. As the temperatures continue to aggravate, it is hoped that New York City will stand a chance to face two adverse flood storms in a century (New York City, NY, USA , 2010). The worst holds for New York City if the temperature continues to increase from the increased emission of Carbon IV Oxide. It is anticipated that if the temperature rise is not regulated, New York City would experience adverse storms every decade by the conclusion of the 21st Century (New York City, NY, USA , 2010). Effects on the New York GDP and Ecosystem
New York City’s economy continues to be leading of all the cities worldwide. In 2018, the city’s GDP amounted to $ 2.5 trillion (NYC Quarterly Economic Update, 2019). The mega figures are attributed to contribution from major components like the transport system, agriculture, energy, telecommunication, and ecosystems. It is unfortunate that the rise in sea levels is expected to cause irreparable losses in these sectors. For example, the 100-year hurricane caused an estimated loss of $100 million in the transport sector (Leichenko, Major, Johnson, Patrick, & O’Grady, 2011). For the telecommunication sector, storms and other calamities resulting from high sea levels are estimated to cause damage of $12 million (Desmet, Kopp, Kulp, Nagy, Oppenheimer, Rossi-Hansberg, & Strauss, 2018). The same magnitude of loss is echoed in the agriculture sector where the losses are expected to hit between $766 million and $1.047 billion by 2080 (Leichenko, Major, Johnson, Patrick, & O’Grady, 2011). For the energy sector, the loss from the disasters attributing to a rise in sea levels will be $ 54 million by the 2050s (Leichenko, Major, Johnson, Patrick, & O’Grady, 2011). All these highlight the impact of the continued rise in sea level to major economic systems in New York.
The mantle of the effects of rising sea levels will be felt in New York’s ecosystem. New York’s coastal regions form the attraction sites for tourism, wetlands and other economic activities, and this has been critical to boosting the economic status of New York City (McPhearson, Maddox, Gunther, & Bragdon, 2013). It is too unfortunate that if the rise in temperature is not contained, the New York coastal lines are set to be washed away by strong storms. It is estimated that impact of disasters resulting from high sea level would cause losses amounting $1.233 billion a year in New York City’s ecosystems by the mid-century (Leichenko, Major, Johnson, Patrick, & O’Grady, 2011). These losses are alarming, and they, in no doubt, jeopardize the GDP of New York City. The aggregation of all these losses from various economic sectors makes a distress call for the need to address the issue of rising temperatures once and for all. The research in no doubt argues the detrimental effects the rising sea levels will cause to the mighty New York City. With the continued rise in sea temperatures, it is likely that New York City will lose its status as the leading city in the world economically. The likely effects of the high sea levels are storm floods, erosion, damage of the property, and possibly losing the wetlands. All these effects would negatively affect the agriculture, transport systems, energy and ecosystem in New York City. These sectors are the greatest pillars in the growth of GDP of New York City.
The findings of this research are worth as they signal a need to develop strategies to prevent disasters resulting from the rise in sea levels. The paper identifies how dire, and frequent the occurrence of the storm flooding would be if the rise in temperature resulting from global warming is not regulated. With the continued increase in temperatures, the situation and likelihood of the occurrence of disasters is turning from worse to worst. The research paints a picture of what New York City stands to lose should the disasters related to high sea levels strike.
Since the rise in sea levels is a global challenge, it is advised that the Federal Government offers a hand to the New York City authorities in devising strategies to minimize the effects of the disasters. It is recommended that further studies are conducted to outline the best ways to control the rising global warming temperatures, and the best strategies to deal with the impending disasters.
