The first stage is trust versus mistrust which occurs between births to twelve years in which kids learn that adults have to be trusted through provision of basic needs. Folks who are responsive to the needs of their children help the kids to develop a sense of trust unlike unresponsive folks who contribute to the development of mistrust in their kids. The second phase is autonomy versus shame which occurs on kids between the ages one to three years on embarking to realize their surroundings. Noticing they can regulate their doings and perform on their settings to achieve outcomes by working to launch freedom, for example a child wanting to dress herself (Ritter & Freund , 2009). Initiative versus guilt is another phase which occurs at the age between 3-6 years when children are able to initiate activities and take charge over their surroundings by socializing with others and playing. This is achieved when the child is given freedom to explore within limits and his choice is respected. Children between the ages of six to twelve years’ experience the task of industry versus inferiority.             The phase of identity versus confusion is faced by adolescents of between 12-18 years when the “y” questions clicks in their minds and try to discover what really fits them by trying different things to discover their adult selves. Those fruitful in this phase develop sturdy individuality compared to those who fail. When individuals are between 20-40 years, they are bothered by intimacy versus isolation. This is the phase in which people are ready to share their lives with others. Generativity versus stagnation occurs when people are in their 40s -60s which simply involves finding one’s life at the same time contributing in uplifting others.  Failures experience stagnation and may feel as being losers. The last phase is integrity versus despair which occurs as from 60 years till death. In this, people look back at their lives and either feel satisfied or as failures. Those who are contented have a sense of integrity while those who failed may feel wasted.

Midlife transition falls under generativity versus stagnation as it is the period in which issues such as being discontented with one’s life which in the past may have been a source of happiness. It is also a phase in which one queries the real meaning of life and the rationality of previously made decisions.

Generativity and stagnation in midlife transitions contrasts in that generativity mainly involves making commitments with others while stagnation involves being egocentric. Generativity also involves growing relationships with the family while stagnation involves failing to get involved with others (Lachman, 2004). The two are similar in the fact that people reflect back on their lives and view what they have achieved and how they have failed. This creates an opportunity in which they can both make adjustments in their lives for the better good.

            Health and lifestyle are very important in the middle adulthood years simply because it is the stage in which people are concerned with the welfare of future generations. This means good and a healthy lifestyle is important to enable one to work hard to support both the kids and ones aging parents.
