Freedom Summer took place in August 1964 and was a non aggressive project organized in Mississippi. The project was aimed at addressing the issues that affected black Americans such as the denial of voting rights and social services such as healthcare Freedom Summer Project Assignment
The freedom summer led to a heated political environment in the south. African Americans from Mississippi who were denied the right to vote held an opposing freedom election in the same year and challenged the right of an all-white congressional delegation that was to represent the state in Washington. However, the residents and volunteers who took part in this project were met with a lot of violence. For instance, there were killings, bombings, kidnappings, and anguish (Francis 1356). For instance, business people of white origin in the state came together and decided on ways of punishing those who supported the Freedom Summer. For example, workers were fired from their jobs, customers were barred from shopping from the stores and mortgages were foreclosed on the homes of the blacks. Such activities further worsened the political environment in the south.
Activists who took part in the Freedom Summer had several political objectives. For instance, they aimed at increasing the number of voter registration. Activists wanted many African Americans to appear in the voters’ registration. By bringing the white students from the northern states, they hoped that the injustices that the people went through would be exposed. Besides, since the African Americans were denied to take part in the election of the president and the local officials, activists conducted an opposing election in which all the residents in Mississippi could take part in. As a result, they held an election before the segregated election was held. The activists also wanted to open community centres in existing and newly built buildings in order to provide services such as childcare, meals, library care, and medical assistance. The actions of the civil rights activists were realistic for the position they were likely to encounter. For instance, through their efforts, the Americans throughout the country were able to know the brutality and oppression that the people in the south went through. This led to the Civil Rights Act of 1965 due to the knowledge that some of the leaders had acquired during the Freedom Summer (Wisconsin 175). Besides, African Americans in Mississippi wanted to gain organizational skills and significant political experience. As a result, in the later years when the African Americans were allowed to vote, many of them had the required skills to run for political offices.
The freedom of summer played a significant role in shaping the current political system in the country. As a result of the Civil Rights Act of 1965, people of African American origin were able to acquire a voting right. In the current political system, people of all races in the country are able to vote and run for political offices. For instance, President Obama was able to run and win during a presidential election in the country. Besides, services that the black people were denied they are now able to access them without discrimination.
